Topical hydrocortisone works much higher up in the skin. It is not a treatment for acne or acne cysts. In general, this category of products, especially its higher potency topicals, can carry side effect of skin thinning.  As far as an acne cyst is concerned, it lies much deeper in the skin, and it is unlikely that a weak topical such as OTC hydrocortisone can reach it to have any significant improvement. The skin overlying the cyst surface is already stretched or thin to begin with; therefore, introducing any topical cortisone for its treatment can risk irreversible skin thinning. Another important side effect of cortisone to be taken into consideration here is "rebound or worsening of acne." Yes, these products can contribute to more acne.

Steroids can worsen existing skin pathologies. Athletes being treated for acne often stop responding to normal treatment regimens if they also continue to use the drugs. Some cases of comparatively benign acne can progress to the disfiguring inflammatory types. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease in which, for unknown reasons, immune cells attack skin cells, resulting in red, scaly patches. One bodybuilder had controlled his psoriasis condition through the use of a topical cream, but when he began using steroids, his condition considerably deteriorated. Eventually his psoriasis became resistant to treatment. But when he stopped using steroids, the psoriasis stabilized and again responded to simple skin-cream treatment. 6

But is raw honey a surefire way to cure adult acne? We asked Campbell, CA, dermatologist Amelia K. Hausauer, MD , to weigh in on the benefits of honey, and according to her, although honey does have its benefits to treat wounds, its not something she would recommend to patients dealing with adult acne. “There is very little scientific literature evaluating honey as a direct treatment for acne. Studies show that honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties but not against P. acnes, the bacteria known to be involved in the development of acne. Of note, the benefits from honey are only if it's raw, unprocessed and unheated.”

I was told by my naturopath that “like cures like”. In that spirit, it makes sense that if your skin is naturally oily, you would use oil to attract the oil off the surface of the skin. I use coconut oil to remove my cosmetics, then I follow with a warm cloth wipe off. After that, I moisturize with 100% aloe vera from the health food store. It is runny, but it dilutes the remaining coconut residue and leaves my skin feeling soft, and the pores feel as though they can breath. I only have about 1TB of oil a day, I don’t always use Coconut, sometimes I use peanut or avocado. My skin looks much better than it used to and my make up comes off like a dream.
That said, if your skin is naturally dry, your pores likely aren’t large, and it makes sense that too much oil would potentially aggravate or offend it, causing a breakout. I think everything in moderation!! Good luck with it!
