Gynecomastia is a common adverse effect of bicalutamide (Casodex) therapy that may prompt some men to discontinue prostate cancer treatment. Tamoxifen has been recommended as a preventive agent for gynecomastia in these patients. A double-blind study of 282 men randomized to receive 20 mg of tamoxifen once per day with bicalutamide or bicalutamide alone found that after six months, gynecomastia and breast pain were significantly reduced in men who received tamoxifen ( versus percent in the control group). 41 An Italian randomized controlled trial of 80 participants also found that 20 mg of tamoxifen once per week is as effective as 20 mg once per day. 42

Tamoxifen is one of three drugs in an anti-angiogenetic protocol developed by Dr. Judah Folkman , a researcher at Children's Hospital at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Folkman discovered in the 1970s that angiogenesis – the growth of new blood vessels – plays a significant role in the development of cancer. Since his discovery, an entirely new field of cancer research has developed. Clinical trials on angiogenesis inhibitors have been underway since 1992 using myriad different drugs. The Harvard researchers developed a specific protocol for a golden retriever named Navy who was cancer-free after receiving the prescribed cocktail of celecoxib , doxycycline , and tamoxifen – the treatment subsequently became known as the Navy Protocol. [63] Furthermore, tamoxifen treatment alone has been shown to have anti-angiogenetic effects in animal models of cancer which appear to be, at least in part, independent of tamoxifen's ER antagonist properties. Hi Karl. I’m really happy for you that you made it through cancer. As you put on weight it’s natural that your fat deposits on your chest became bigger too. Also, the medications probably messed up your hormones. Definitely, a healthy diet and regular exercises would be helpful. I recommend you to consult your condition with a doctor to establish if you have just fat on your chest (pseudo gynecomastia) or some hormonal changes in your breast tissue (gynecomastia). As there are different medicines for both conditions you will be better off knowing what exactly you have.
